BACKGROUND: This presentation is aimed to investigate oral conditions of homosexual males with HIV / AIDS in Japan, especially focused on the early root caries.

METHODS: In twenty-five Japanese males infected with HIV-1 by homosexual intercourse, oral conditions were assessed by using CRT, Dentobuff Strip, Dentocult CA, chewing gum test and Salivaster. Other oral conditions were also assessed and evaluated in routine examinations. Early root caries was also evaluated as a routine examination. The patients were classified into two groups; Group A: patients without early root caries (n=15), 35.4±10.0 years old (range: 25-42); Group B: patients with early root caries (n=10), 34.2±11.0 years old (range: 28-40).

RESULTS: The quantity of saliva in Group B (6.9±1.8 ml) was significantly smaller than that in Group A (12.0±2.9 ml) (p<0.05). Lactobacillus was less found and caries treatment was less frequent in Group A than in Group B. All of the patients in Group B were suffering from endodontic problems or serious periodontitis.

CONCLUSIONS: Various oral condition changes in Group B were relatedwith the presence of early root caries, which might be due to dry mouth possibly caused by the medical treatment. This may be one of the side effects of HAART. Therefore, thorough attention should be paid for maintaining good oral hygiene of people with HIV/AIDS not to cause early root caries.
