BACKGROUND: in 1999 we did the first prevalence study of antiretroviral therapy (ART) in HIV / AIDS patients who assisted to 19 hospitals in Buenos Aires, Argentina. We decided to compare obtained data with a new study performed during three months of year 2000.
METHODS: data were obtained from clinical charts and studied with Epi-Info vs. 5.0. 2x2 tables were done to perform x2 tests.
RESULTS: in 1999 were evaluated 1601 patients from 19 hospitals. In 2000 we studied 1418 patients from 13 hospitals. We found non significant differences for the following variables: age (32.1 years in 1999 and 33.6 years in 2000), masculine gender (58.7% and 57.8%), primary school (37% and 39.3%), sexual HIV risk category (54.8% and 56.7%), IVDU's (40.7% and 39.9%), receiving ART (73.4% and 73.2%), receiving drugs from the National Control Programme (82.8% and 85.3%), receiving their first ART (46.8% and 47.3%). 139 patients in 1999 and 110 in 2000 never accepted ART. There was a significant fall in the number of patients treated with a combination of two drugs (p<0.0001) and more patients were treated with 3 drugs without a protease inhibitor (P.I.) (p<0.0001). More patients had PVL control determinations (56% in 1999 and 64.5% in 2000, p=0.0001). Similar number of patients had <500 ARN copies/ml at their last PVL (54.1% in 1999 and 57.8% in 2000, p=0.08). In year 2000 where introduced more sensitive PVL determinations. 38% of patients of 2000 had <50 ARN copies/ml. In 1999 72.6% of patients had >200 CD4+ cells/ml. In 2000 this percentage was 70.5%. p=0.4. Cocnclusions: 1-in year 2000 we found more patients treated with a combination of three drugs without P.I. 2-more patients had control PVL. 3-similar number of patients had PVL values of <500 ARN copies/ml in 1999 and 2000. 4- 38% of patients of year 2000 had <50 ARN copies/ml. 5-similar number of patients had <200 CD4+ cells/ml.
