BACKGROUND: In 1998 a multicenter prospective study (PISCIS) was implemented to recruit all HIV patients attended from that time in 10 hospitals from Catalonia and 1 from Balearic Islands. This abstract describes the characteristics epidemiological and biological of newly diagnosed HIV cases and the evolution of the Antiretroviral prescription pattern.
METHODS: The PISCIS Minimum Common Data set (MCD) includes epidemiological, clinical and biological data. Follow up is performed according to the physicians criteria, but the MCD is systematically updated every 4 months. Till September 2001, 2340 patients have been enrolled. For the purpose of describing the newly infected patients, only those actually diagnosed of HIV after January 1998 were included 1107 (47%).
RESULTS: Out of 1107 newly infected: 831(75%) men 276(25%) women, being women younger (ma: 32) than men (ma:36). Transmission categories: 36 % IDU, 28 % MSM and 24 % Hetero for men; 22% IDU and 63% Hetero for women. For the 798 (72%) patients in which this data was available at diagnosis, the median of CD4 was 156 c/mm3 (P25: 47 - P75: 395) and the median of viral load (VL) was 103.000 c/ml; in 32 (4,4%) of them VL was undetectable (<200 copies/ml). For all enrolled the ARV pattern at the end of the year was:[table: see text]
CONCLUSIONS: According to our data heterosexual transmission is becoming the first route of HIV adcquisition, particularly among women. There is a high proportion of probable late diagnosis (CD4 <200 c/mm3 and a VL> 100.000 c/ml). 80% of the patients are currently treated and a shift from IP to NNRTI has been identified.
