OBJECTIVES: 1) to know the number of patients diagnosed between 1999-2001 in our community 2) to study the risk factors, inmunollogic-virologic state and CDC category at diagnosis 3) consulting motives and treatment needs 4) to compare the results with a random group diagnosed previous to 1999.

METHODS: a retrospective, epidemiologic study of our HIV -outpatients, comparing 35 patients diagnosed after 1999 with 63 patients diagnosed before that year.

RESULTS:[table: see text] Consulting motives: own initiative 23%, from primary attention 16%, other specialist 9%, from urgency 6%, from partner 3% and from drugs rehabilitation center 3%.

CONCLUSIONS: 1) the mean age was similar, but more women were diagnosis after 1999 compare to the control group 2)Main risk factor was heterosexual transmission in our community, comparing 61% patients infected by intravenous drug use before 1999 to 65% infected by heterosexual relation without protection between 1999-2001 3) 86% of the patients required HAART at the moment of diagnosis 4) a greater effort must be achieve in the sanitary prevention of heterosexual transmission
