BACKGROUND: with the introduction of the antiretroviral therapy (ART) for the treatment of AIDS, the scientific community and health care professionals, involved with the assistance of people with HIV disease, have been trying to improve quality of living of these people. However, in case of non compliance there is a possibility of failure of this treatment due to the development of viral resistance. This study aims at verifying the compliance rate of the ART among people with HIV/AIDS attended at day unit of the Clinics Hospital of the Campinas State University in Campinas city, Sao Paulo state, Brazil.

METHOD: this is a descriptive retrospective study of a population composed by 60 patients, of the daily attending program of the hospital. They were interviewed (46) about the number of medicines of the antiretroviral therapy that were taken 3 days before in order to allow a comparison with the corresponding prescription. The assumption was to consider compliant to the treatment those patients with rate of the 80% and 95% of the prescribed medicines.

RESULTS: 46 patients were effectively interviewed; 13 (28,3%) took less than 80% of the medicines and 33 (71,7%) took 80% or more. When considering the rate of 95% just 14 (30,4%) took less and 32 (69,6%) took 95% or more.

CONCLUSIONS: the literature registers average rate of compliance around 50% as opposed to greater rates shown by the data collected in this study. The results show the importance of the nursing team and others health care professionals dedication to develop activities to encourage the compliance to treatment with ART. It is necessary to continue this study in order to identify what are the risk factors of this population for non compliance to treatment with ART.
