to assess the impact of HAART on the presenting features and the outcome of AIDS-KS we analyzed data from two large italian cohorts: GICAT (italian cooperative group on AIDS and tumors) and icona (italian cohort naïve antiretrovirals). From january 1996 to november 2001, 163 consecutive pts with AIDS-KS were enrolled within the two cohorts. Thirty-eight (23%) pts were on HAART (from at least 3 mos) at KS diagnosis (KS-HAART) and 125 (77%) were HAART naïve at KS diagnosis (KS-naïve). Median duration of HAART (before KS diagnosis) of the 38 KS-HAART pts was 11 mos (range 3-38 mos) and HAART regimens were as follows: 2 nrti + 1 ip (30 pts), 2 nrti + 1 nnrti (8 pts). A comparison of presenting features and outcome between the two groups (KS-HAART vs KS naïve) is summarized in tables 1, 2, 3. .[table: see text]
CONCLUSIONS: Although patients on HAART at KS diagnosis present with better immunological and virological status, HAART does not impact on the presenting features and outcome of AIDS-related KS. Supported by ISS and AIRC grants.
