BACKGROUND: In Sweden, the diagnosis, treatment and care for HIV infected is free of charge and therefore all patients have access to antiretroviral therapy. The availability and use of drugs against HIV and associated opportunistic infections have resulted in reduced rates of HIV morbidity and AIDS mortality. This study will describe the trends in HIV morbidity and mortality in relation to the use of anti-retroviral agents and selected drugs against opportunistic infections during the past ten years (1991 to 2001) in Sweden.

METHODS: Information concerning the rates of HIV infection and AIDS mortality are obtained from the Swedish Institute for Infectious Disease Control (SMI). Information on drug use is obtained from the National Drug database at The National Board of Health and Welfare. The use of antiretroviral agents (reverse transcriptase inhibitors and protease inhibitors) and selected agents for opportunistic infections during 1991 to 2001 will be described.

RESULTS: The results clearly show the effect of the introduction of HAART on HIV morbidity and mortality. A decreased use of some drugs for opportunistic infections was also found. Results and description of the main outcomes will be available on site at the XIV International AIDS Conference Barcelona, Spain, July 7-12, 2002.
