BACKGROUND: The first cases of AIDS were reported in Peru in 1983, after a sustained increment of notifications until 1996 the curve shows a falling tendency up to now, in order to know what is taking place, a specific curve on transmission way tendency is carried out .

METHODS: The System of AIDS Cases Notification is based on 5000 establishments of Health, using the case definitions standardized for the country in 1995 (Based in CDC 1993), the information is Processed as part of the Epidemic Surveillance -II Generation - System by the General office of Epidemiology of the Ministry of Health.

RESULTS: When analyzing specific curve on transmission way, a sustained descent of the MSM cases is observed since 1996, the registered accumulated incidence (RAI) is of 0.3/1000 for year 2000, while in Heterosexual the curve is still ascending progressively with logarithmic tendency OF 0.02/1000 for year 2000, the Ratio of the MSM/Heterosexual incidence is of 15 for year 2000.

CONCLUSIONS: The decrease of reported cases is because of the decrease in MSM cases, a progressive increment of cases is observed in heterosexual, being the incidence very low. The epidemic is still " Concentrated" in MSM population, Due to the unaccessibility for antretroviral therapy, an explanation for the reduction of cases would be given by mortality of a great quantity of patients infected in the decade of the 80'.
