BACKGROUND: We present the results of HIV/AIDS monitoring in different risk groups in Ukraine and the research data on the structure of the circulating HIV-1 population.
METHODS: We used epidemiological analysis of HIV prevalence and AIDS incidence. The subtype of the virus was determined by serotype analysis of blood serum obtained from HIV-positive patients. The analysis was carried out using the panel of synthetic peptides, homologous to the V3 region.
RESULTS: The epidemic in Ukraine is spreading in so called waives - more intense among injecting drug users (HIV prevalence reaches 64% in some regions), less intense among the other risk groups. The estimated prevalence of HIV in adults is about 1%. During the past three years some stabilization of the epidemiological process is observed. The number of new cases of HIV-infection ranges from 500 to 600 per month. Among all the infected individuals 2700 are children. The number of AIDS cases is increasing and reaches 2800. Half of the people with AIDS have already deceased. Serotypes HIV-1/A and C predominate among the circulating HIV-1. About 50% of the samples reveal the cross-reactivity (A/C, A/E, A/B/E, A/B).
CONCLUSIONS: The epidemiological situation in Ukraine remains intense. The shift of HIV-infection from risk groups to general population is observed. HIV-1 A predominates among the HIV-1 serotypes. The substantial number of samples show the cross-reactivity.
