BACKGROUND: The rate of HIV/AIDS among pregnant women in Russia is 88,5 per 100.000 investigated in 2001 against 29,8 in 2000,most of them are drug users. They did not reach medical care in time and it is important to realise the program of prevention mother to child HIV transmission.
METHODS: Women who visited the Bus and drop-in-Center were anonymously questioned, received syringes, needles, condoms and tested on HIV, syphilis and viral hepatitis from 1.12.1999 to 1.12.2001.
RESULTS: The first two months 61 women applied to us. The correlation of men to women was 9:1.The overwhelming majority of women who applied had year duration of drug use. During the next 20 months 322 women drug users applied to the Bus. Now we have relation of men to women 6:1(against 9:1 two years ago).Women who visited the Bus were anonymously questioned about condom usage: 16,5% always used a condom during sexual intercourse, 54%-sometimes and 29,5% never used a condom.32% of these women appeared to be drug users for 1 year, 35% for -2 years, 18% for 6 months and15% have been on drugs for more than 2 years. It turned out to be that some had unfinished secondary education (27,8%) most of them had secondary education (55,7%), other college graduate (14,7%) and only 1,6% was university graduate. During their visits women got the journal "AIDS,Sex,Health", received syringes, condoms consultation with a doctor . We found that 33% of women previously had had STD and used condoms rarely, 78% did not have a permanent sexual partner. Other investigation showed that 58 women were HIV-positive(15,1%) and 37 of them keep on visiting the Bus as they get also an emotional and financial support there.
CONCLUSION: These data show us an importance of harm reduction programme among women for prevention of HIV transmission.
