BACKGROUND: To make effective prevention of HIV/AIDS close to sex workers in Yaounde: we use approach gender effective implication of sex workers and their clients in fight against AIDS. Clients were taking in partnership in every health talk, debate, discussion in sexuality to give their viewpoint in AIDS prevention.
METHODS: The prevalence rate of HIV/AIDS and sexual practices close to sex workers was the basis of sensitisation, mobilization and implication of sex workers peers and their clients in HIV/AIDS prevention. So Identification of prostitutions place (hotels, bars, streets, etc...), planification of work on the field (discussions, debates, health talks) by CLAP (Club des Amis de la Prudence) peers educators have been done. Health talks, debates between sex workers and clients were controlled by persuasive peers educators (CLAP) and some specialists in HIV education. This health talks were sustains by educative and convincing album (pictures - books) posters, sketches, films, folders, condoms and artificial penis. This strategy open sexuality dialogue between sex workers and their clients to prevent themselves STi'S/AIDS.
RESULTS: Health talks target to sex workers and their clients controlled by peers educators from June 11 to December 21st 2001 permit sex workers to reinforce their credibility, to better understand the importance of "have safety sex". During six months, 12 peers educators (sex workers) controlled 112 health talks - debates in prostitution place; 5304 persons (either, 2370 sex workers and 2934 clients) was sensitise; 8800 condoms distribute, 10000 sell and 142 use for demonstration; 93 posters glue, 6227 folders distribute; 04 films project and 05 sketches play.
CONCLUSIONS: Approach gender is one effective way success in fight against AIDS because it promotes sexuality dialogue close to sex workers and clients. In Cameroon men controlled sex, and because HIV/AIDS concern every body, men have to be involve in fight against AIDS.
