Promoting safer sex to prevent STI/HIV/AIDS and reduce STD among men who have sex with men in Belarus.

The project "Male sex workers in Minsk. Social and behavioral research on HIV/AIDS/STD. Aspects related to sexual behavior and drug injections" (granted by the Open Society Institute (Soros fund).was realized in Minsk 01/02/2001-01/08/2001. ).The social and behavioral research in this target group was held in Minsk for the first time. Since 1998 conducts HIV/AIDS/STD prevention work among MSM (Men who have sex with Men). Since 2001 we received a grant from the German Health Department on the project of HIV/AIDS/STD prevention among MSM in Belarus (national project). This project is planned for 2 years. To increase the level of awareness and knowledge about STI/HIV/AIDS, risky sexual behavior and safer sex. To ensure access to early quality diagnosis and effective treatment of STD cases. To ensure access to quality condoms and water-based lubricants, especially at places and times with urgent needs. To foster more positive attitudes regarding one's own sexual health. To increase the level of awareness about injecting drug usage based on the harm-reduction strategy To create an environment more conducive to safer sex among MSM. Targeted information, education and communication (IEC) materials developed, produced and distributed to 10000 MSM in six cities. Peer education provided to 6000 MSM in six cities. Free quality condoms and water-based lubricants promoted / provided to MSM, especially at times and places with urgent needs. A well functioning referral system for a range of services for early diagnosis and treatment of STIs in operation. Key stakeholders (decision-makers, media, police) informed and sensitised to issues regarding MSM, STI and HIV. MSM community empowered and actively supporting STI/HIV prevention among MSM
CONCLUSIONS: Preventive activity among INI, carried out within the framework of the project has the important value on decrease of speed of transfer HIV/AIDS/STD in Belarus.
