BACKGROUND: ARAS is a national, nongovernmental, apolitical and humanitarian organization whose major purpose is to stop the AIDS epidemics through information/education programs and through the development of the social services for the people living with AIDS. In Romania, the highest number of children (1,450) and the second highest number of adults (177) infected with HIV/AIDS live in Constanta, a seaport and tourist city with a population of 500,000. In this project we worked with women affected by HIV/AIDS. These women are from different cities and villages from Constanta County. Most of them have to face a lot of economical, domestic and social problems. Those who do not live in cities do not have the possibility to get information in areas where they live.
METHODS: trainings, "face to face" discussions and questionnaires
RESULTS: During 4 month ARAS Constanta organized 15 workshops for 171 women affected by HIV/AIDS. From analyses of dates obtained from questionnaire results that: 1.Most of the women (85%) were 25-35 years old; 2.For most of them (93%) it was for the first time when they obtained professional information about family planning; 3.Some of the women (7%) have started using contraceptives or other family planning methods; 4.This project provided training for a small part of them (171) but due to the family planning manual much more women (800) received useful information. We distributed the family planning guide at the Municipal Hospital (where the women came for ARV treatment once per month) and at the other NGOs working in AIDS area.
CONCLUSIONS: 1.The family planning trainings and the guide provided to HIV affected women were very useful tools for them to start to make changes in their lives; 2.Women proposed us to organized some family planning and STDs trainings for their husbands or partners and for their children.
