OBJECTIVE: To evalute the impact of counseling on living positively with HIV/AIDS and prevebtion of further spread of HIV among positive women.
METHOD: Personal experience of 11 years as an HIV positive woman. Focus group discussions with 60 community members in two rural parishes of Kyanja and Ddundu. Drama Group members of TASO Mulago, involved in community HIV/AIDS awareness. TASO data, follow up 1999-2001. Findings: Before counseling, HIV positive women live in denial. 85% of HIV positive women in TASO sought services at symptomatic stage/fully blown AIDS stage. Economic and social status of a woman influences her negotioating powers to use a condom. After counselling 75% of the women managed to put up an income generating activity and 70% out of the 75% are capable of negotiaring successfully to usa a condom. 90% of HIV positive women were willing fo have a normal sexual life 100% of the HIV positive women in TASO understand the dangers of having unprotected sex and the importance of living posirively with HIV/AIDS.
CONCLUSION: HIV/AIDS counseling makes a signifigant difference in the way HIV positive women behave after the intervention. RECOMMENDATION: Counseling should be part and parcel of the HIV/AIDS package of care in all care and support programmers.
