From the year of 1999 to mid year of 2001 it was carried out a prevention project of STD/HIV/AIDS with students of 4th, 5th, and 6th grade of primary school, teachers, and parents in 7 regions of the country in which there are located offices of the sponsoring organization of this same project. During this period, with the participation of a coordinator and 7 facilitators of prevention of STD/HIV/AIDS, 120 rural schools were attended and 25,000 educational contacts with students of primary, their/its master and some family parents. were carried out in each year. As a result of this project, we participated in the validation and re-issue of sexual education guides and prevention of STD/HIV/AIDS that were elaborated in a pilot project of other organization in deprived areas of Guatemala. Equally, it was possible to raise awareness, through a personal contact work, to the inhabitants of the villages where the schools are located, to whom it was delivered booklets and other printed materials of the different organizations that work in prevention of STD/HIV/AIDS in Guatemala. Some of the learned lessons include that it is very important that officials of the sponsoring organizations be involved in these projects so that they could understand rightly their goals and operation, and also that the facilitators should have some previous experience in the field and should receive a wide training in the development of appropriate attitudes so that they understand that this is a social work.
