ISSUES: A multidisciplinary program set up by the "la Caixa" Foundation to understand the AIDS epidemic from the perspective provided by various complementary fields (biology, history, economics, ethics, etc.) and to promote preventive, social behaviour based on shared understanding and comprehension.

DESCRIPTION: The Program was inaugurated in 1994 with the backing of experts from a range of disciplines. This led to the putting together of a Pack containing a variety of resources (printed documentation, videos, computer games, ideas for drama productions, quizzes, forums, etc.) that were sent to all the Secondary Schools in Spain and widely used by teachers and students each year. The Program has now been up-dated and over the last twelve months a web site ( www.sidasaberayuda.com) has been set up in the four official languages of Spain. The web site offers schools, teachers and students the possibility of simulating a "Virtual Congress" on AIDS.

ISSUES: The on-going evaluation of the Program (three researches have been realised until the moment) demonstrates that the multidisciplinary approach, based around the activities undertaken by secondary school pupils aged from 14 to 18, is an effective means of promoting favourable personal and group attitudes to the prevention of HIV infection, of developing respect for those carrying the virus and of encouraging a critical awareness of the socio-economic characteristics of the distribution of the epidemic and of the measures adopted by the International Community in its prevention and treatment. RECOMMENDATION. The Program demonstrates that the age of the secondary school pupils is ideal for acquiring a good understanding of AIDS.
