BACKGROUND: For the widespread of HIV virus through sharing of contaminated syringe and needle, unprotected pre and extra marital sexual practices among the productive age groups especially in the unorganized and traditional types of communities where formal types awareness through media and IEC materials, have only superficial change of safer practices. The community outreach and care has proximately to the people and has led to a therapeutic relationship, thereby a realistic and practicable solutions towards the unsafe practices comes up to those who are infected and infecting peoples.
METHODS: The community based outreach intervention which ha been functioning since 1993 targeting to 1200 IDUs and their sexual partners on intervention of HIV/AIDS through harm reduction approach with the activities of house to house counseling, drop-in-counselling, condom promotion, needle syringe exchange, volunteers training, referral service and home care activities. There is considerable response from the parents and community at large thereby opportunities infection among the IDUs and partners are very rare compare to other IDUs who do not get this service.
RESULTS: Comprehensive outreach activities is well suited for the indigenous community settings.
CONCLUSIONS: Application of outreach, care and support makes the discriminated people come out with reality and help themselves in regards to safer practices and improve their physical and mental health. This project can also be successfully replicated in any communities professionally. So, this activities will obviously benefit to prevention/intervention and care of patients specially who has no access to HIV related drugs.
