OBJECTIVE: it was found in the year 1998 that it is important to educate commercial sex worker(csw) visiting the tourist place courtallam issues related to std/hiv/aids on condom as a disease protection. a situational assessment study was done to understand the nature and extend of the problem in the target area. this was followed by a participatary evaluation study. methodology: a project supported by apac - usaid was implemented past three years. the major componant of the project included behaviour change communication, increase std health seeking behaviour, condom promotion, peer promotion etc. a situational assessment study adopted both quantitative and qualitative research method like structured interview, key informant interview and focus group discussion(fgd) result: in the base line, it was found that 30% of the commercial sex worker(csw) were using condom with their last client. it was also found that they have lot of misconception about the prevation of the disease and they had very low risk perception. how ever in the participatory evaluation is found that it is encouraging find that 70% of commercial sex worker(csw) are reporting of using condom with their clients. disscussion: the above change in the behaviour among commercial sex worker(csw) in courtallam shows that great effort by the project has helped to commercial sex worker(csw) to involve in safe sex. how ever it is important that still more effort has to be taken to address the rest of the sex worker to change their behaviour.
