Two years intervention program for sex workers in Douala.

BACKGROUND: To ensure an effective and by targeting sexual workers and promoting continuous and proper condom use. ACTIVITIES: Home visits are done when the project team visits the seaters in their communities for the purpose of seeking their wellbeing, doing follow-up visits, giving health talks and promoting condoms. Three community health nurses do the visits. Cartons of male and female condoms and some educational materials are taken along. All the brands of condoms are made available. The PLWHA and nurses give health talks to the seaters in small groups. Questions on subjects like family planning, education, and hygiene are asked. The seaters are mobilised to attend the campaign.

RESULTS: The project has built a strong relationship with the sex workers. Between 1999 - 2001 over 1000 seaters benefited from the project 21 to 300 home visits, 4000 referrals were seen. Condom sales has increased during Home visits over the years. And a drop in the sexual transmission disease and AIDS of observed as only 5 cases were declared in the beginning of year 2000.
