BACKGROUND: a registration for the social and sanitary card-index of the STD center of reference in Dakar is compulsorily accompanied by attempted efforts of discussion. This give birth in the center, to AWA Association . One of the aims of this association is to supervise activities of reconversion among HIV negative prostitutes in order to complete the support to be given to them.

OBJECTIVE: to consolidate help and to HIV positive prostitute for them to give up prostitutes. To consolidate a change of behaviour, a regular and efficient use of condoms and medical flow-up until stop prostitution. To help them to prepare for their future.

METHODS: site: permanence office of AWA in the I.H.S of Dakar registered prostitutes that awa is members. Financial support from AIDSCAP and FHI for the reconversion of 27prostitutes, each of them for over a period of 4 months. Social enquires at home. Study of credit and saving plan - supervision of activities control of monthly. Medical follow. Voluntary and definitive radiation from sanitary card index.

RESULTS: from December to 1996 to December 2000,17 prostitutes were selected to carry out activity of trade, catering craft -13 relays agents, and 2 HIV positive prostitutes 2 negatives. Positive results 18 projects have been achieved,2 in process; saving have been doubled for 7 of them, entirely reconstituted for 4 of them by half for 6 of them,12 definitive radiations, 5 in process,4 STDs among of them. Difficulties:a great need for more availability among supervisions - absence of professional trainers - mobility and illiteracy often the main causes of difficulties- difficulties in supervising and managing prostitutes.

CONCLUSION: we have found this experiment very interesting;it has allowed some prostitutes to give up prostitution, to have better rehabitation at a personal, social and family level. It also permits to envisage more actions at a lager scale but it requires further studies so as measure the continuity .
