ISSUES: Afflicted victims from sexual violence are more vulnerable to other kinds of violence such as prostitution, drug abuse, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), gynecological diseases, sexual disturbances, depression and suicide. Getting STD due to sexual violence may imply in severe physical and emotional consequences. Nowadays, the main worry among sexual abuse victims is the possibility of HIV infection.
DESCRIPTION: We presented data on people that informed sexual violence and looked for attention in a public hospital from August, 2000 to December, 2001. Information were given either by the victim or next of kin, through a structured questionnaire. The consultation precluded the need of a legal police or coroner proof of violence. All patients received epidemiological treatment with ciprofloxacin and azitromycin, and hepatitis B immunization. Those who arrived up to 72 hours after the violence were given antiretrovirals, not given to those who had arrived after such period or with a long-standing abuse. There was also psychological and psychiatric help available. When divided by age bracket at the moment of violence, we found that 25% were children to 10 years of age (6.7% of male gender and 93.3% female gender), 63.3% from 10 to 20 years of age (all female), and 11.7% adults (all female too) (WHO Criteria, 1977). The perpetrator was known by 59.6% of the victims, the number of aggressors ranged from 1 to 8 (mode 1), and in female victims vaginal penetration was prevalent (45.3%).
ISSUES: Our effort proved worthwhile.
RECOMMENDATIONS: It is needed to increase availability of this kind of care facility. Nonetheless the causes of violence must also be addressed.
