BACKGROUND: Human Immunodeficiency virus infection is an important cause of sexually transmitted infection among both the sexes in reproductive age group we did a community based study among the individuals living below the poverty line, on literate, semiliterate and illiterate individuals on the impact of infection, attitude to prevent the infection in other sex partners.

METHODS: The study was done in Khammam (INDIA) on 160 individuals of both sexes, males 64 (40%) females 96 (60%) infected with HIV-1, of them 49 (30.26%) are having active manifestations of AIDS. Evaluations are done on the role of education in relation to awareness, prevention, care and impact alleviations

RESULTS: In the study none of the persons are on any antiretroviral treatment. 61% of the infected are totally illiterate, 22% being semiliterate and 17% being literate, of the total of 96 females 68 (70.83%) are active sex workers. None of them are literate. 22% are convinced on counseling on safe practices. Majority in the study are not insisting on using condoms or microbicides and afraid of revealing their HIV status to their sex partners. Of 160 infected 68% are depressed, have least concern for others on matters of prevention.

CONCLUSION: In spite of mass education by various health agencies, many are not practicing or insisting on safe sex after being infected. The crisis of spread lies with infected, active sex workers, many feel better educative methods, promotion of use of antiretroviral drugs, condoms and microbicides than mere posters on walls and communication media.
