Action plan for the prevention of HIV/AIDS in the Municipality of Habana Vieja (El carrito por la vida.).

BACKGROUND: the need to raise HIV/AIDS and STIs risk perception and promote safer sexual behavior in a popular sector of Havana's metropolitan area.

METHODS: a multisectorial plan of action was developed. It was directed to the community in general, its leaders, political and mass organizations, government decision-makers, as well as the health, gastronomy, tourism, culture, and sport sectors. The intervention provided the basic elements to adequately evaluate risk and advocated condom use. It included de use of El Carrito por la Vida, a trailer decorated with prevention messages from which information was imparted and in which people were counseled. The results were evaluated after two months of work.

RESULTS: the intervention achieved "good risk perception" in 55,3% of the outreached; 28,8% achieved "fair risk perception" and 20% "low risk perception."

CONCLUSIONS: multisectorial educational work raises the perception of risk in the population outreached.
