BACKGROUND: Globally, publications on AIDS, aid the health personnel to respond to present and future challenges of AIDS in a better and a faster way. The aim of the study was to determine the pattern and trend of AIDS publications in the last two decades.

METHODS: All articles on AIDS or HIV were searched for MEDLINE using SPIRS search Engine at The TN. Dr. MGR Medical University, India. Using Fox Pro ver 2.5 Software, various fields like Author, Country of Publications, Language, Publication Type, Year etc., were analyzed exhaustively. A detailed analysis of the publications on AIDS related articles from the year 1982-2001was done. Analysis into developed and developing country was also done.

RESULTS: Total of 1,01,628 articles in AIDS was processed. The number of AIDS articles available in 1982 was 8 only. This has risen to 7426 articles in 1991 and from 1992-2001 the trend was varying. 76% of the AIDS articles were published by Journals from developed countries. The proportion of AIDS articles of the developing country published in developed country journals was 89 %. Strangely only 11% of the developing country articles were published in the developing country journals. The results were then subdivided by year to identify the trend and then sorted to identify the increasing significantly number of articles. Most of AIDS publication (83%) were published in English while the rest were published in other languages like Chinese, German etc. Based on publication type, 87% were journal article. The rest were in the form of interview, review article, legal case, multi center-study letter etc.,

CONCLUSION: The results obtained indicate that there is a steady increase in AIDS publications every year. Comparatively, there is a significantly less contributions on developing country articles even from journals published from developing country. Much work is needed to increase the publications from these countries as they bear a great burden of AIDS cases globally.
