BACKGROUND: A HIV/AIDS prevention programme was designed after results of a survey on the campus were analysed, other programmes were reviewed, behavioural models studied, experts consulted and the student community themselves encouraged to give their opinions. The goals of the programme was to prepare students to deal effectively with the physical, emotional and social demands, especially with regard to HIV/AIDS, that will be made upon them throughout life, as individuals and as members of families and communities.

METHODS: The programme consisted of eleven sessions, each having its own content. It was essential that the aims of each session were met in order to accomplish the goal of the programme. To measure the effectiveness of the programme, questionnaires were completed during the first and last sessions.

RESULTS: According to the analysis of the results of the three questionnaires, which were completed, the programme did show improvement in all the measured areas. 80 Percent of the respondents felt that all their expectations were met, while the other 20 percent were of the opinion that most of their expectations were met. 80 Percent of the members felt that they were adequately prepared to address the AIDS phenomenon, while the rest indicated that they were still afraid to deal with AIDS sufferers.

CONCLUSIONS: The aims of each session, as well as the goal of the programme were met. Bibliography Arnold, W. 2000. De Miranda, S. 1998. UNAIDS, 2000. Van Dyk, A.C. 1999. Whiteside, A. & Sunter, C. 2000.
