Innovative approaches in HIV/AIDS awareness program.

ISSUES: To increase awareness and bring behavioral changes about HIV/AIDS and related issues among youth. To involve youth in HIV/AIDS prevention activities.

DESCRIPTION: HIV/AIDS awareness programs was initiated through quiz and poster competition among youth. Five girls colleges were selected and the participants were provided informative material, literature about HIV/AIDS for preparation of quiz and making posters. During quiz, questions regarding HIV/AIDS prevention, control and present data were asked. STDs and other public health problems were also covered. Cash prizes and awards were given to the all participants and trophies to the winning teams. General audiences attending the competition were also involved and encouraged by direct questions and prizes.

CONCLUSION: This approach provide an opportunity to the participants and audience become the part of the process rather than just being a passive audience. This approach provides an opportunity of creating awareness with in locally acceptable atmosphere, norms, language and cultural values. Families of the students were also involved during the preparation process of quiz and poster at home. The activity attracted and involved the youth as a active member to bring about changes in their own attitude and practices. Acceptances of membership of the NGOs for working as volunteer for HIV/AIDS prevention activities reflect the success of approach to involve the youth.
