BACKGROUND: The sexual profile can help in recognition of daring conducts to get AIDS. With the analysis of high school students' behavior, preventive campaigns could have a better direction. The purpose is to observe the sexual behavior of high school students in Joinville to identify any conduct that could facilitate HIV's infection.
METHODS: Four Joinville's schools was studied, from May to June of 2000; 1227 students in total. The student's answered a questionary wity 21 items and an optional open question. The obtained informations was analised in Epi Info 6 program.
RESULTS: The medium age was 18 years old; 43,8% of the students already had sexual intercourse and 77,5% of them began before 16 years old. Among those students, 85% had from 1 to 4 partners in the last year, 81,3% refered that they didn't have doubts about AIDS and 31,2% didn't use preservative in the first sexual intercourse. Despite this context, 92% of students expounded that they received orientation about this subject at school and 91,1% thought that they don't have a risky behavior to acquire AIDS. Nevertheless, 34,1% had 4 or more partners in one year and didn't make use of preservative in all sexual intercourses.
CONCLUSIONS: Teenagers are having a risky and inappropriate sexual iniciation. A high number of students had sexual orientation (92%). It didn't result in conduct modification however. This informations can show that's necessary to have new models of prevention programs.
