BACKGROUND: Nowadays teachers are, more and more, called to perform/act as educators, in a perspective of a comprehensive education of their students. However, many refer having difficulties, particularly regarding Sexual Education and AIDS Prevention. Thus, it was developed a survey with Portuguese universities attempting to evaluate the needs of education of future teachers in these matters.
METHODOLOGY: 474 students attending last grade of Higher Education courses for acceding the career of teaching - Preschool, Basic and Secondary teaching degrees - answered to a questionnaire on this survey objectives. Main results 1- The majority of those inquired recognises the importance of School in providing Sexual Education / AIDS prevention. 2- Only 25% received some education on Sexuality and AIDS Prevention during their university course; In only 1/4 of these, education included pedagogical methodologies to approach these matters. 3- 2/3 of the inquired students, do not feel they will be capable of talking about these subjects in the classroom.
CONCLUSIONS: Pedagogical curricula to acceding to a teaching career, namely preschool, basic or secondary degrees, rarely include Sexual Education / AIDS Prevention. When included, it does not prepare teachers with the necessary sense of security to deal with these subjects in the classroom, with the adequate pedagogical methods. It is necessary to reform the pedagogical education of the future teachers allowing them to become active and motivated agents of Sexual Education and AIDS Prevention.
