AIDS related mass communication: a quality assessment system.

ISSUES: The observation made since 1982 by the H.C.O (Health Communication Observatory) of daily press messages on AIDS and other health related themes showed frequent dysfunction caused by erroneous or inaccurate news, excessive alarmism, lack of useful information, sensationalism and misrepresentations. This can have a substantial, negative impact on public behaviours (and consequently on its health) which calls for careful study of a quality assessment system to serve as guidelines for information providers as well as tool for consumer evaluation and choice.

DESCRIPTION: To improve the quality of mass media information on AIDS a workgroup made up of a variety of professionals from different institutions (ministry of health, university, public health services, RAI-Italian television network, journalists, compaines, consumers and patients associations ecc.) formulated criteria (accuracy, reliability, readability, usefulness, balance, independence) that can be assessed using specific indicators according to different applications levels: publishing and television network management, Journalists, Interlocutor of journalists in the medical fields, public.

LESSON LEARNED: the different participant in the production cycle of the communication on AIDS, and health related topics has begun to discuss using the same language and trying to get over the differences of mentality and point of view of scientists, pratictioners, journalist, etc. about the mass media health information. RECOMMENDATION: this research recommends the experimentation of the quality assessment system to help the construction of an efficacy AIDS related information.
