ISSUES: Capacity building of sex workers(SWs) organizations could play vital role in influence anti trafficking activities in Bangladesh.
DESCRIPTION: In 2001 Trafficking intervention under HIV program of CARE-Bangladesh launched a pilot project to reduce the vulnerability of HIV/AIDS through combating Trafficking in women & minors in sex trade & identify the root causes of trafficking and related other factors. As part of the policy CARE organized & conducted 3 Capacity Building Workshops with the participation of different SW organization(Brothel based SWs/Street based SWs/Transgender)to build their skill with a view to improve their understanding & effectiveness of their anti-trafficking activities. All together 105-SWs & transgender representatives attended and out of which 36 of them were executive members of their organization. SWs organization took anti trafficking program as one of their organizational agenda as their basic objective is to protect unnecessary harassment of SWs & to legalize their profession.
ISSUES: * This short of training could sensitize SWs organization in motivating in anti trafficking work. *The SW communities learned that violence against SWs by police and pimps could be reduced if they took initiative to stop criminalization of trade. *SWs can easily develop efficient communication channels to find out trafficked women into the sex trade. *Organized groups of SWs are in a position to established strict norms against trafficking within sex trade & monitor those norms. *Organized groups of SWs could control trafficking through mechanisms of self-regulation.
RECOMMENDATIONS: To increase involvement of the SWs organization to combat trafficking capacity building and sensitization workshops could play vital role. Develop Intervention for combating trafficking by SWs organization. Net working and liaison with the SWs organization in different countries should be developed.
