ISSUES: Behavior Change Communication as a Model to prevent HIV/AIDS/IMS transmission.
DESCRIPTION: On previous years, a manual of Behavior Change Communication was developed based on adults learning methodology to increase the capacity of NGOs working with the issue of HIV/AIDS/STD in each provinces in Indonesia. Until end of year 2000, a small team of experts were assigned to renew it based on the latest experiences with the objective to increase the capability of NGOs' field workers, to provide a solid practical base that would enable them to integrate concepts of each material: the behavior of the implemented intervention program. The module has been tried out in some areas of Indonesia and effectively has been implementing in other areas. The trainers capability became the main pre-requirement for the utilization the curriculum for outreach/field workers/peer educators.
LESSON LEARNED: The 1st batch Training of Trainers was conducted by the Aksi Stop AIDS Program collaborated with AusAID as an important step in preparing new trainers to put to practice their training in assisting programs focusing on behavioral changes. As the result, now Indonesia has 32 trainers from 8 provinces. They all are mastering on facilitating and BCC Skill now and hopefully will work as a supporting network disregarding of the originating NGO. Then, they train the outreach workers as the follow up and the outreach workers should implement the program directly to the field/place where they work with. RECOMMENDATION: Trainers need more opportunities to practice their newly acquired skill & increase their experiences with it and may also be asked to assist training in other region as the general objective of the program to respond to lack of qualified human reasources problems. And it is identified that there are behavior changed in the field and hopefully it may reduce cases of HIV/AIDS/STI transmission.
