ISSUE: Prayatn had been working towards developing community's capacity to respond to its health and developmental needs in Sanjay Colony since 1996. General health is grossly neglected in the area and people are highly vulnerable to infections and diseases because of poor environmental sanitation and lack of basic civic amenities. Economic backwardness, poor knowledge and lack of awareness, coupled with high rate of RTI/STD infection and T.B magnify the risk of HIV transmission. Also, prevalence of high risk sexual behaviour among the adolescent girls / boys, men and women necessitated the need to undertake study .
DESCRIPTION: PCA study was carried out using various tools like community mapping, group meetings with Adolescent girls /boys, men / women, doctors, RMP's, STD patients. Patients availing mobile health facilities, Individual Interactions,Time line, Cause and Impact. Data was collected through focussed group discussion or group meeting. In each of the discussion / meeting a team consisting of a facilitator, recorder and observer were present who ensured that all the necessary information is taken as also verbal and non-verbal gestures were observed for future intervention. It was ensured that at least two of the three members of the team were present for each of these meetings / discussion. Also data was collected through Individual interaction with the community people. LESSONS LEARNT: The findings of Participatory Community Assessment highlighted low visibility despite high vulnerability and a need to have an information and education programme specifically aimed at women, follow up and tretment of high risk cases (T.B, RTI/STD), making available laboratory and diagnostic facilities for detection of T.B/ STD/HIV/AIDS and also create an environment which would promote condom use and frank information exchange without stigmatization and discrimination against women.
