ISSUES: "Voluntarios Contra el Sida" collaborated and took part in two campaign organized by the Argentinean AIDS Society, affiliate to the IAS. Each one of them had its own specific objective. The results we reached led us to think about new strategies to be established.
DESCRIPTION: Each campaign has been developed in a different social-economic-political context. The first one took place in 1999, and the other in 2001. We direct our efforts towards the strategies of previous sensitization, assistance and characterization of the sample attending our seat. The sample showed similar population feature. The attendance increased from 24 persons/day to 85. 57% attended for the first time in order to be tested on each campaign. Previous sensitization phase on the 2nd campaign took place only one week before the rest of the test. There were problems in both campaigns with the survey of testing materials, and with an increasing demand that overcame the expected attendance.
ISSUES: We could detect that every campaign generated from involved institutions on this issues has not been enough, considering the lack of concern in governmental social-economic policies about Health and Education (normally linked to financial variables, so typical fact in this part of the world). We may say there is an increasing spectrum where NGOs are able to work, generating more and more social commitment and getting back solidarity and prevention in pursuit of welfare, setting demagogic behaviors aside. We remark this kind of experience in order to increase services and actions. RECOMMENDATION: Campaign must be designed considering a short and mass previous sensitization phase, in order to get a higher impact. Limits must be placed on objectives within the social-economic-political context in every region, prioritizing prevention and assistance.
