ISSUE: The HIV epidemic has entered into a critical phase in China where there is a rapid increase in infection rate. Unofficially, it was estimated that there were over 600,000 cases of HIV infections by the end of 2000, up to date may be one million. Most of people living with HIV/AIDS are from IDUs. But, the severe problem was a lot of blood donors who were infected with HIV when the HIV contamination of blood cells was transfused back to the donors. It is reported that there were 118 people living with HIV/AIDS in the Yuncheng prefecture of the Shanxi province. All of them are poor farmers and were infected by illegal blood donation the past years.

DESCRIPTION: In order to explore a model to raise AIDS awareness level and create an environment without discrimination against the PLWHA in risk areas, Chinese Foundation for Prevention of STD & AIDS developed health education and intervention on AIDS in the Xia county of the Yuncheng prefecture from August--December, 2001.. Measures were adopted: To held a training session on HIV/AIDS for 180 health professionals and social workers; To conduct basic surveys among farmers from 10 villages; To develop health education and intervention activities, such as TV programs on AIDS prevention and control were shown for 28 days at the county TV station, and for 20 times at the broadcasting stations; To distribute leaflets on HIV/AIDS to 7000 households; To held mobile exhibitions on AIDS Prevention in the projected villages; To play Video CD on HIV/AIDS for 4500 farmers; Evaluation survey in a randomly selected sample was conducted. The AIDS awareness level was increased; the attitude to the PLWHAs was improved. RECOMMENDATION: Broad intervention and care in the risk areas should further strengthened.
