BACKGROUND: ROSES is the sustainability of OPD's first sexual health awareness raising project for the unmarried girls abbreviated as SaHARA. To have a constant source of correct information in the community, the project worked towards the initiation of a CBO as a result of its methodology.
METHOD: One of the components of the SaHARA project was the Girls Club with a general body of registered members and an elected Executive body. By the end of the project, foundation of ROSES were laid down, of course with the technical, human, moral and very little financial help from OPD. The Executive body of ROSES got the place for its office on voluntary basis from one of its members, chalked out organizational structure, aims, objectives and activities of the organization. The most important thing is that in a low income and conservative area executive body is comprised of unmarried girls who are carrying on their work through house to house meetings. ROSES OBJECTIVES: 1. Information dissemination regarding é º Health especially sexual health é º Environment 2. Establishment of a skill development center for local girls ROSES Activities: v Community visits v Community Meetings v ROSES Club activities v Training of Executive body
RESULTS: Issues addressed: Menstruation Vaginal discharge STIs HIVAIDS Environmental pollution Personal hygiene Modules developed: v Personal hygiene module v Health hazards of environmental pollution & prevention v Recycling of waste materials Direct beneficiaries: 433 females ROSES members: 56 Membership fee collected: 300/- Rs. Skill development sessions: 2 (started in the month of December) Fee collected: 260/- Rs.
CONCLUSION: ROSES is now in the process of receiving its first tiny funding with the help of OPD but it has proved that with determination, will and good intentions the work done not only bring forth the favorable results but also sustain and spread in the community.
