Backgrounds: After Identification of First AIDS case in Rajasthan in 1987 there was increasing trend of HIV infection in State. AIDS control programme was launched in 1992 last for 6 years, good amount of awareness could be generated. However, the trend of HIV was continuously increasing. In the year 1999 more focused programme such as targeted intervention, Condom promotion, telephone counseling, Voluntary HIV testing etc. were launched which act as barrier in percolation of infection from high to low risk population. Trend of HIV infection in state has been accessed by annual unlinked anonymous HIV surveillance.

METHODS: To monitor the HIV trend in State Six each sentinel sites established at STD and ANC clinics for surveillance in high and low risk population .Unlinked and anonymous survey is being carried out annually for a fixed period ( 12 weeks ), on fixed number of samples with definite inclusion criteria . Sites locations were determined keeping in view the geographical, urban, male, female representation in State. Survey were carried out on internationally accepted methods. Samples were collected for VDRL & tested for HIV along with VDRL. 400 samples from ANC and 250 samples from STD cases were collected and tested. RESULT: On the basis data of Unlinked anonymous sentinel surveillance India has been categorized in High, Moderate and Low prevalent areas Data of last three years surveillance of Rajasthan shows that HIV sero prevalence in High risk group ( STD Cases ) is less than 5 % and in Low risk group ( ANC Cases ) is less than 1 %. With this data State is categorized as low prevalent State. 1998 1999 2000 2001 HIV sero-positivity STD cases 4.40 3.20 3.25 4.00 ANC cases 0.40 0.25 0.25 0.25

CONCLUSIONS: The areas where the HIV infection is in low intensity and mainly concentrated in high risk can better checked by focused approach for high risk group mentioned above. To control the HIV infection
