BACKGROUND: Knowledge of prevalence evolution and incidence of HIV in the population, at a certain time. Identify population Sub-groups in wich the problem is major, to evaluate and established the priorities of the Prevention Program.

METHODS: Three HIV Sentinel Sites of Epidemiological Surveillance have been implemented in different cities and populations groups of Bolivia. The methodology used for this research was double blind, in each Sentinel Site had been collected 780 samples and each one had the ELISA test for HIV. The collection of samples lasted three months esach year and the research was made to the following population groups: Pregnant woman who attended to the Maternity Percy Boland in the city of Santa Cruz. Food handlers in the city of Cochabamba. Hospitalized patients in the Bolivian-Holland Hospital of El Alto city.

RESULTS: HIV prevalence in pregnant woman has increased from 0% in 2000 to 0.9% in 2001. The prevalence in food handlers in Cochabamba city maintains in 0.13% during two years of research and the prevalence in hospitalized persons in El Alto city for 2001 has decreased from 0.26% in 2000 to 0.13%.

CONCLUSIONS: This research shows the considerable increased of HIV prevalence in pregnant woman in the city of Santa Cruz, wich also shows the probability of giving birth children with HIV if an adequate prevention treatment in not made to avoid HIV perinatal transmision. HIV is moving around food handlers as well as in hospitalized patients.
