DESCRIPTION: Condom use issues which can be addressed by understanding the manufacturing and testing of condoms are (1) why condoms break, (2) why condoms don't fit properly, or (3) why condoms may not be effective. In order to address these issues, it is important for the healthcare provider to know and understand condom manufacturing and testing methods and how these issues can be addressed with clients when they ask questions.
ISSUES: The purpose of this paper is to describe the condom manufacturing process, how condoms are tested, how condom test methods affect the condom in use. The methods will be described in technical and practical terms, including how condoms should be properly tested when demonstrating condom strength and durability to clients.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Once understood, these methods will be applied to show how these factors affect education and social marketing programs to promote safety and confidence in condom use. Further, this paper discusses how to design simple educational units using condoms quality programs as a method to assure consumer confidence in condom quality.
