OBJECTIVE: To compare the incidence of dyslipidemia in HIV-infected patients (pts) on highly active anti-retroviral therapy (HAART) with or without protease inhibitors (PIs) and pts on no therapy.

METHODS: Demographic and laboratory data of HIV/AIDS pts were retrieved from an electronic database of HIV clinic at UMass Memorial Medical Center (UMMMC). The proportions of pts with cholesterol (CH) and triglyceride (TG) levels- 200 mg/dl pts on HAART with or without PIs and on no HIV treatment were compared.

RESULTS: Of the 312 pts who had total CH checked, 110 (35%) had a CH level of >200 mg/dl; 230 pts (59%) had TG checked, 97 (42%) had TG >200 mg/dl. The distribution of these pts among the categories of HAART therapy with or without PIs and on no treatment is shown in the Table. [table: see text] (Pts C, T, L and H are the number of pts who had their CH, TG, LDL, and HDL respectively, checked in each category of treatment)

CONCLUSIONS: CH and TG levels >200 mg/dl were not confined to pts on HAART with PIs; they were seen with almost equal frequency among pts on HAART without PIs. TG level >200 mg/dl was seen with equal frequency among pts on HAART with PIs, HAART without PIs and pts not on therapy.
