ISSUES: Aids for Community Course has been presented in a University Hospital located in a district of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. A multidisciplinary team gives classes from what Aids is to clinical manifestations in children and adults, treatment, social problems and solutions, psychological follow-ups, HIV infection prevention, nursing care and nutritional support. The aim of this course is to train people from community to help HIV positive / Aids patients and to offer this type of model to other health workers that need to train their community too.

DESCRIPTION: A multidisciplinary team ( doctors, a social worker, a nurse, a nutritionist ) talk about the following subjects, showing their experience in these themes for about 50 minutes each: What Aids is, clinical manifestations and treatment, from mother to baby transmission, Aids and children, social rights, nursing care, HIV prevention, psychological and nutritional support. We give away didatic material to attendees ( leaflets ). People from community ask questions after each presentation. The classes are given in Pedro Ernesto University Hospital from State University of Rio de Janeiro.

LESSONS LEARNED: Aids Course for Community has been presented for 9 years annually in the last week of November. Last year we had 128 enrolled people, 102 women and 20 men, 23 nursing technicians, 13 nursing students in general, 10 psychologists, 7 social workers,6 housewives and others. This course has the approval of the community that attends the classes with attention. In the end, a test with 50 questions about the main subjects is given with a successfull result. Last year there were 95% of corrected answers.

RECOMMENDATIONS: For sure, Aids patients and their families have been benefited with this course. We think to improve this type of activity offering several courses for community with a smaller group of participants.
