The AIDS Community Demonstration Project is a community- level HIV prevention intervention that was tested in five cities (Dallas, TX, Denver, CO, Long Beach, CA, New York, NY, and Seattle, WA) with six different populations (men who have sex with men, injecting drug users, their female sex partners, female sex workers, high-risk youth, and communities with high rates of STDs). Relying on the heavy participation of target populations members for the content and dissemination of the intervention, this can be described as a "bottom up" intervention of demonstrated effectiveness. The findings of the intervention research and several subsequent community implementations of the intervention strategy will be described, with particular emphasis on injecting drug users.
