Few states have AIDS Drug Assistance Programs (ADAP) that cover all the treatment types listed here, but you should always have your doctor or health care provider ask. Arrangements can sometimes be made on a case by case basis. One of the first things that an ADAP will ask is if you have already applied for Medicaid, which almost always covers more things than any ADAP. An ADAP might help pay your insurance premiums or assist with co-pays. Your Medicare Part D plan may also cover more than a state ADAP, but you should always check what any Medicare Part D plan covers. Some states will help you with premiums for insurance or even co-pays with Medicare Part D.

Other categories of drugs that are sometimes covered by ADAP include anti-infectives, cardiovasculars for lipids and blood pressure, CNS drugs (such as anticonvulsants, anti-depressants, anxiolytics, sedatives, hypnotics and substance abuse agents), endocrine drugs (for wasting, diabetes, bone loss and thyroid agents), gastrointestinal drugs, respiratory drugs, urologicals, topical agents, dental products, diabetic monitoring devices, and more.

There are many categories of drugs related to treating AIDS, HIV or Hepatitis. You might also consider experimental drugs. Sometimes, a state will have a separate Hepatitis vaccination or screening program that offers treatments as well. Other times, the best way to find out about Hepatitis treatments is to contact an agency or organization that deals mostly with AIDS, or the HIV/STD Department of your state.

HIV-related Treatments, Tests, and Vaccines

  • Blood Tests : CD4 and lymphocyte subsets, HIV PCR Viral Load Test, Drug Resistance Tests (phenotypic and/or genotypic), Tropism Assay (Trofile, etc.) for CCR5 and/or CCX4 receptor tropism, abacavir hypersensitivity test (HLA-B*5701), Hepatitis Serology (tests for hepatitis), STD screening
  • PCP Prophylaxis and Treatment : clindamycin, dapsone, leucovorin, pentamidine, primaquine, sulfadoxine/pyrimethamine, trimethoprim, trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole

  • Herpes Infections : acyclovir, famciclovir, penciclovir, valacyclovir

  • Fungal infections :amphotericin B, caspofungin, clotrimazole, econazole nitrate, fluconazole, flucytosine, griseofulvin, itraconazole, ketoconazole, miconazole, nystatin, terbinafine, terconazole, voriconazole

  • Toxoplasmosis :azithromycin, clindamycin, leucovorin, pyrimethamine, sulfadiazine, sulfamethoxazole, triple sulfa

  • Cryptosporidiosis : paromomycin

  • Microsporidiosis : albendazole

  • Anemia : Procrit (epoetin alfa), Epogen (epoetin alfa), Aranesp (darbepoetin alfa)

  • Neutropenia : Sargramostim or Filgrastim for severe neutropenia due to chemotherapy, drug toxicity, or HIV disease

  • Thrombocytopenia (HIV-associated) : Immune globulin Rho (Win Rho SDF) for HIV-associtaed thrombocytopenia (low platelets).

  • Thrombocytopenia (chemotherapy induced) : Oprelvekin (Neumega) for chemotherapy induced thrombocytopenia (low platelets).

  • Wasting Syndrome :cyproheptadine, dronabinol, testosterone, megestrol acetate, thalidomide, Serostim, nandrolone

  • Prevention of bacterial infections : intravenous immune globulin

  • Condyloma acuminata :alpha N3, imiquimod, podofilox
