Washington, 4. März (AFP) - Eine Gruppe von US-Senatoren will das Blutspende-Verbot für homosexuelle Männer in den USA aufheben. In einem Brief an die Arzneimittelbehörde FDA bezeichneten die 18 Senatoren das seit 1983 bestehende Verbot am Donnerstag als "überholt und wissenschaftlich unsolide". Gerade angesichts des "anhaltenden und dringenden Bedarfs" von Krankenhäusern an Blutkonserven müsse der medizinisch unnötige Ausschluss ganzer Spendergruppen revidiert werden, heißt es in dem Brief, den das Büro des demokratischen Senators John Kerry veröffentlichte.
Das Verbot war 1983 als Reaktion auf die Aids-Epidemie unter schwulen Männern erlassen worden. Die Regelung schließt grundsätzlich alle Männer von Blutspenden aus, die nach 1977 gleichgeschlechtliche Kontakte hatten.
Die Unterzeichner des Briefs wiesen darauf hin, dass inzwischen ohnehin alle Blutspenden zweifach auf den HIV-Erreger überprüft würden und die Gefahr einer Ansteckung deshalb "praktisch null" sei. Auch das Rote Kreuz der USA befürworte eine Aufhebung des Verbots. 17 der unterzeichnenden Senatoren zählen zur Demokratischen Partei, ein weiterer ist parteiunabhängig.
