Pacific youth warned on Aids

BBC News - Monday, 2 September, 2002

Health experts have warned the first ever youth conference on HIV and Aids in the Pacific that the rate of infection in the region is rising quickly.

Officials from the United Nations children's fund - which organised the meeting in Fiji - said the spread was largely due to unprotected heterosexual intercourse.

A senior UN official warned that if the Pacific did not wake up to the threat posed by the spread of HIV and Aids, the region would suffer a similar health disaster to that which has ravaged parts of Africa.

The conference has been addressed by young people from Zambia who have spoken about the devastating effects the epidemic has had on their country.
