(BW) (AIDS-HEALTHCARE-FOUNDATION) http://www.aidshealth.org; AIDS Healthcare Foundation Joins On-Line Community; Respected Web Designer Patrick Shandrick Designs Site Pro Bono

BUSINESS WIRE;

LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 16, 1998--AIDS Healthcare Foundation's (AHF's) ability to communicate cutting-edge information about AIDS and its own programs and services took an exponential leap forward in late December with the launch of its Web site, that has been in development since April of last year.

The site can be accessed at: http://www.aidshealth.org

The event was set in motion last spring when Patrick Shandrick, a respected Southern Californian Web designer, was recruited -- over the World Wide Web -- to undertake the design project. Shandrick, a native of Pittsburgh, who came to Los Angeles five years ago, graciously donated his design services pro bono for AHF's Web site -- a gift of almost $10,000 in estimated design work.

"www.aidshealth.org is a great vehicle to find information on all of the different aspects of AIDS Healthcare Foundation, of the different aspects of AIDS Healthcare Foundation," said AHF President Michael Weinstein. "Patrick's much-appreciated pro bono contribution brings AHF a state-of-the-art site that enables us to maximize our ability to get comprehensive AIDS information to the public."

With its 20 locations (Healthcare Centers, Houses and Thrift Stores) and nine major programs and divisions, AIDS Healthcare Foundation presented Shandrick a formidable design challenge.

The site includes pages on AHF advocacy (government -- local, state and federal areas); AHF fundraising and giving opportunities;

AHF education/information; volunteerism/special events; and AHF media and public relations information.

www.aidshealth.org will provide comprehensive, cutting-edge information on advocacy, drug research (including clinical trial opportunities), lectures from the weekly "Cocktail Hour" forums at the WEHO Lounge, and the Positive Healthcare managed-care program, general information on AHF's fundraising Out of the Closet thrift-store chain and special events and will be updated regularly.

The site enables AHF to provide the public with timely content that may not be covered in mass or even targeted media (such as the gay press) in such an in-depth manner.

Unlike many contemporary Web sites, AHF's site is based on information, not on images. "The whole point of the Web site is to disseminate information to the public," said Shandrick.

"In terms of its audience, I was always concerned for the lowest- common-computer denominator -- someone who may have an old computer, a slow modem or who may be accessing the site from a high school or abroad with a slow computer connection -- I wanted to emphasize text and essential information to larger audiences who need it and who would not have access to it."

Shandrick is a graduate of the Annenberg School for Communications at the University of Southern California, where he earned a master of arts degree. He has designed Web sites for Disney Store Online, Lifetime Television (Lifetime Online), and is currently working on a project for Hundai.

Shandrick is the Web-site designer of http://www.aidshealth.org; other sites he's designed may be viewed at URL: www.zonal.com/zonal Anthony Schulte, AHF's director of publications and advertising, recruited Shandrick and oversaw the design and implementation of

www.aidshealth.org (contact 213/860-5224). James Harcourt is AHF's director of MIS: 213/860-5238.

AHF serves more than 5,000 Greater Los Angeles patients at four outpatient health-care centers, two residential facilities; the WomensCare Center; through Positive Healthcare, the first AIDS-specific managed-care program in the nation; through AHF's TREATMENT=LIFE division, including the WEHO Lounge, the nation's first coffee house/HIV-information and testing site; and through AHF's Research Division.
