"Through official and legal channels, they won't infiltrate into Zimbabwe because we have strict mechanism whereby condoms which enter the country have to fulfill specific criteria for quality," he said, adding that only those condoms which passed stringent checks and tests were circulated.
Last week, South African health officials tried to calm down a furore over the distribution of sub-standard condoms after investigations showed that as many as one million condoms in circulation in that country were defective.
They said one brand from an Indian supplier was defective.
However, Marowa clarified that smuggled condoms were beyond his department's control and warned the public to be wary of people who could sell sub-standard condoms to make quick money.
For quality of condoms to be maintained people needed to use them correctly. Condoms in Zimbabwe are distributed through three channels - the public sector which distributes free, the commercial sector and the Population Services International, a non-governmental organisation, which sells condoms to economically disadvantaged persons at rates lower than those of commercial retailers.
