Trevor Manuel says nevirapine is too expensive

PRNewswire - 22 February 2002

The United Democratic Movement Youth Vanguard (UDMYV) hopes that the Minister of Finance's, Trevor Manuel, warning that the cost of nationally providing Nevirapine would use up the entire health budget, would not be used as an excuse not to do so at all.

The UDMYV recalls offers from international companies and other donors, to sponsor the provision of antiretroviral drugs. In fact, Boehringer-Ingelheim, which for two years has tried unsuccessfully to persuade the government to accept its free offer of Nevirapine, just yesterday said it does not intend to give up.

Kevin McKenna of Boehringer-Ingelheim was quoted saying "When we first offered the drug it was meant for the whole world as it still is now. Rejection won't make us change that policy; we still want to provide the medicine. Should they (the Health Department) approach us we will be glad to enter into negotiations with them."

Although Minister Manuel has announced a large increase in the budget for spending on South Africa's fight against HIV/Aids, the UDMYV hopes that these funds will be properly administered and successfully and effectively used.

Unfortunately provincial governments have proven their inability to spend the money allocated to them for the fight against HIV/Aids and the UDMYV calls on government to ensure that these desperately needed funds benefit those who it was intended for; those who suffer from this terrible illness and their families, friend and community who suffer with them and to motivate, through HIV/Aids education, each and every South African to treat themselves and others with respect.

The UDMYV calls on the Ministers of Health and Finance to immediately contact companies, like, Boehringer-Ingelheim, and enter negotiations to facilitate the provision of antiretroviral drugs, in order to save money and so ensure that the budget is properly divided into all priority areas.
