Get Organized!
A little planning can reap big (state) benefits.Applying for benefits usually takes time and can be frustrating. The first step toward getting access to HIV meds is organization. Ask your doctor or local HIV group for help. Here are a few tips:
- Find out exactly what documentation you need before applying for benefits. Most programs will ask you for documents that prove your eligibility: Have copies of your birth certificate, driver's license or passport, and employment or medical records.
- Consider getting a case manager if you are applying for Medicaid, especially if you're sick. Many programs assign a case manager who can help you make appointments, get benefits, and deal with problems.
- Keep copies of all your documents and write down everything-including telephone numbers of agency representatives.
- Contact your local AIDS group or New York City's AIDS Treatment Data Network for updates and questions about ADAP (see "Resources").
